Eva Houston, a senior at Westside High School, has been named to the 2018 United States Paralympic Athletics All-American High School List. Houston is one of only 35 student athletes nationwide selected for this exceptional honor.
“Not only is Eva involved in track, she has been a member of the band the last four years,” said Westside High School Athletic Director Tom Kerkman. “Eva and her dad have been partners in the band, and it is really special to watch. She is an extremely hard worker on the track as well. Eva and Coach Jon Preister have worked together on workouts and meets. It’s fun to watch when she competes!”
Houston has also been named a 2018 US Paralympics Track & Field High School All-American, and traveled overseas last summer representing the United States (and Westside!) at the 2018 International Wheelchair Games in Ireland, where she won three silver medals and a bronze. She also finished 2018 ranked 9th in the world in her class in the 800 meter.
“The fact that Westside High School has created an inclusive environment for students like Eva to be an athlete should be celebrated,” said an Adaptive Sports USA representative in a letter to Kerkman. “Your school’s actions have positively contributed to the national movement to expand sports opportunities for athletes with physical abilities.”
