Westside has been honored with several awards by the Nebraska Association of Skilled and Technical Sciences Educators, including the 2018-2019 High School Excellence Program Award Winner and the Middle School Teacher Excellence Award.
The Westside High School Engineering & Technology Department was selected as the 2018-19 NASTSE High School Program Excellence Award winner. Principal Jay Opperman received word of the award earlier this month. Westside High School students partner with businesses across the Omaha metro area, visit state-of-the art facilities and work sites, and are allowed to pursue apprenticeships and internships while still attending high school. Thanks to the Westside Foundation, crews are currently expanding the Westside High School Engineering Lab, available to all students in the 2019-2020 school year.
Westside Middle School teacher Matt Bova was also honored with the 2019 NASTSE Middle School Teacher Excellence Award. The Nebraska Association of Skilled and Technical Sciences Educators will present Mr. Bova with his award at the Nebraska Career Education Conference in Kearney this summer.
“This exemplifies how well we are preparing our students for all potential career paths; college, work in trades, or any other field they are interested in,” said Dr. Mark Weichel, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning. “Nebraska employers need engineers and technology experts more than ever, and we are helping shape those future employees.”
