Special Education Assistant Named Employee of the Month
Posted March 15, 2019
Charity Kaufman, Special Education Educational Assistant at Rockbrook Elementary, has been named the March Employee of the Month for Westside Community Schools. Kaufman will be honored by the Westside Board of Education and receive $100 from Angel Starks with Nebraska Realty.
Kaufman was nominated by a Special Education Teacher at Rockbrook who wrote:
- “During the past six years, Charity has been an integral member of our Rockbrook Special Education team. She demonstrates positive leadership with the staff and students she is assigned to work with. Charity is a creative problem solver. She collaborates with staff to come up with innovative ideas to help resolve even the most challenging academic and behavioral concerns. Charity ‘thinks outside the box’ and we value her thoughts and perspective. She has attended additional training and completed coursework at home to continue learning about students who have special needs and who exhibit problem behavior. Charity’s positive leadership and input improves the programming for our students with special needs, and I believe I am a better teacher because of having opportunities to work collaboratively with her.
- “Charity performs many duties beyond the normal expectations for an educational assistant. She assists certified staff in assessing students’ skills and compiling data for academic and behavioral progress each week. Charity is trusted to take on many responsibilities that go far beyond what would be typically expected. In fact, she often completes tasks in advance of being asked to do so. Charity often stays longer than the hours she is expected to work and comes in early or on days she has off from school to help certified staff members on her own time.
- “Charity’s job performance is excellent! She is a natural teacher and extremely talented. Charity works with students who have a wide range of special needs across all elementary levels. She is able to guide children to make helpful choices, often averting children from making a hurtful behavioral choice. Charity is calm and patient which helps to deescalate situations. She sets realistic, yet high expectations for students. She is a very hard worker and uses every moment of her workday assisting students and staff. If a student is absent or able to work independently for a period of time, Charity is conscientious about checking with certified staff to find out how else she can be of help.
- Charity is upbeat, and she is a ‘sunny side up’ and ‘glass half full’ thinker. Her positive outlook and nurturing spirit are examples for Rockbrook staff to follow. Even on the most difficult days, her sense of humor can lift up the spirits of those around her. She is a role model in cultivating positive morale within the school, team, and with students.”
