FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Longtime Coach Bob Greco To Retire From Westside
After 26 years guiding thousands of Westside student athletes, Varsity Boys Baseball Coach Bob Greco is retiring from teaching and coaching at Westside High School. Greco is one of the most successful high school coaches in Nebraska history, winning seven state NSAA championships, six state legion titles, and mentoring several professional baseball players.
Greco began teaching at Westside High School in 1997, where he taught mathematics for 22 years until his retirement from teaching in May. He began coaching Varsity Baseball in 1994, and in addition to his 13 state titles, led the Warriors to 5 state runner up finishes. Greco was named the Schrager Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2010, was awarded the Schrager Outstanding Career Achievement Award in 2015, and was named the Omaha World Herald Coach of the Year in 2015. He retires with an overall career record of 573-227, and of his 26 seasons, made the state tournament 21 times.
“What a wonderful opportunity it was for me all of those years ago; I didn’t realize the impact it would have on me,” said Greco. “All of the people that are in my life now that never would have been in my life if I hadn’t gone to Westside. I’m just so thankful for the opportunity I received all those years ago, and getting to be around so many great people.”
Among Greco’s most notable professional athletes from Westside: Jake Meyers (Houston Astros), Darin Ruf (Philadelphia Phillies) and Matt Waldron (Cleveland Indians). Dozens of Greco’s players and students went on to pursue baseball at the college level, and many have cited his influence on their personal and professional lives. Greco and his 1999 Westside team were named to the Westside Athletic Hall of Fame last Spring, and he was selected to coach the 47th Collin-Orcutt All-Star Game in May.
“It’s the right time for someone else,” said Greco. “With me not being there teaching, it’s the right time for someone else to take off with it.”
Assistant Coach Steve Clark will take over as Interim Head Coach for the 2020 baseball season. Clark is also the Head Coach of the Westside Girls Varsity Basketball Team, 2015 and 2017 NSAA State Champions. Westside plans to organize an event to celebrate Coach Greco’s career later next Spring.
“I can’t thank Bob enough for all he has done for Westside Baseball,” said Westside Athletic Director Tom Kerkman. “He’s one of the best coaches in the business. Not only is he a great coach, he has been a great teacher. Just watching him interact with the students at Westside High was inspiring. He treated every kid with respect and dignity. He always wanted the best for his players. He was an innovator in his profession. He was a great role model for other coaches in the building. He will truly be missed.”
