Westside German teacher wins national award
Westside teacher Dr. Ginger Starks Yoble has been named the 2017 K-8 Outstanding German Educator by the American Association of Teachers of German. This national award is given annually in recognition of innovative teaching, extraordinary talent and exceptional leadership in the German teaching profession.
Dr. Starks Yoble, a teacher at Westside Middle School since 2007, lived abroad as a Fulbright Scholar, was a cooperating teacher on several occasions for pre-service teachers, and has hosted exchange German teachers from the German national government for academic years. She is also a leader in personalized learning, presenting curriculum through puppet shows, intricate envelope activities, by creating GIF’s and video production and beyond. She also collaborates with colleagues within the Westside school district, as well as with educators at the state and global level, in curriculum development and assessment.
“I am incredibly honored and humbled by this recognition,” said Starks Yoble. “I also thought about the ‘circle of significance’ leading up to this award. The circle begins with teachers, those who taught me to learn and those who taught me to teach. Then comes my students for their willingness to take risks with learning and letting me guide them along the way. Then, the parents who have supported their students’ choices for learning German–which indirectly was also showing their support in me and my teaching. The circle couldn’t be complete without recognizing the other amazing teachers that I work with at WMS and throughout Omaha. And finally, my family, though they are not German speakers, they do enable me to give more than 100% to teaching.”
Fellow Westside Middle School educator Kelly Schulz helped recommend Dr. Starks Yoble for this award.
“Her excellence in teaching is unmatched,” said Schulz. “Extending her knowledge of the German language and culture is an everyday part of life for Ginger, utilizing unique and engaging ways to make the subject matter come to life in our class. As a colleague of hers, I aspire to emulate the unparalleled and substantial rapport that she has developed with each student. It is candidly obvious, she knows and values each child’s unique qualities, quirks, and dreams.”
“She is very deserving of this award and our students are very fortunate to have her as their teacher,” said Westside Superintendent Dr. Blane McCann.
Dr. Starks Yoble was honored by the Westside Board of Education at their Tuesday, September 5 meeting. She will be honored at the AATG Convention, held in conjunction with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language Convention and World Languages Expo, in Nashville, Tennessee on November 8.
