Westside Educators Honored With Multiple Awards
Two Westside teachers and Westside Superintendent Dr. Blane McCann have been awarded several honors at the 2018 Nebraska Career Education Conference. Crystal Bolamperti and David Shabram, both from Westside Middle School, were among an estimated 20 educators honored before some 500 educational leaders from across Nebraska. Bolamperti has also been awarded the B.E.S.T. Award for 2018.
Dr. Blane McCann was presented the 2018 Nebraska Career Education Outstanding Superintendent Award. Under Dr. McCann’s leadership, community partnerships increased from just a few dozen in 2012, to more than 600 and counting in 2018, resulting in countless opportunities preparing our learners for future careers. This school year, Dr. McCann was a key player in a groundbreaking partnership between Westside Community Schools and Nebraska Furniture Mart, creating the School of Entrepreneurial Thinking. Nebraska Furniture Mart will invest $150,000 into a 2-year pilot program fully immersing students into the business world to better learn leadership, critical thinking, problem solving, communication and corporate insight. Dr. McCann was also instrumental in a partnership between Westside Community Schools and Children’s Hospital & Medical Center. Through Project SEARCH, high school students with special needs are provided job training and internships at the hospital, resulting in more than 20 full-time positions and independence for the students who take part.
David Shabram, Engineering and Technology Teacher at Westside Middle School, was named the 2018 Outstanding Skilled and Technical Sciences Educator, sponsored by Associated General Contractors-Nebraska Chapter and Nebraska Building Chapter-Associated General Contractors. He received a special plaque and $1,000 for the honor. In April, Shabram traveled to Atlanta where he was also awarded the Emerging Leader Distinction by the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association.
Crystal Bolamperti, Technology/Business Department Head and Teacher at Westside Middle School, was named the 2018 Outstanding Business, Marketing, and Management Educator, sponsored by the Nebraska Bankers Association. She received a special plaque and $1,000 for the honor. Less than a month later, Bolamperti received the B.E.S.T Award, presented to teachers whose professional activities influence business and marketing education in Nebraska. The B.E.S.T. Award represents involvement in professional associations, community and school activities, professional leadership development and service to the business education profession. It also exemplifies superior qualities including dedication to students, community outreach, and continual classroom improvement efforts.
Both Shabram and Bolamperti will be honored by the Westside Board of Education on July 16.
