Westside Community Schools unveils new Oakdale Elementary School
Westside Community Schools unveiled a new school, Oakdale Elementary, on Thursday, December 14. Students and District leaders held a brief ceremony at the school at 1:00pm, followed by a VIP tour for special guests, including alumni who attended Oakdale in the 1930’s.
Speakers at the ribbon cutting ceremony included:
- Rosie Zweiback, former President of the Westside Board of Education
- John Hughes, Chairman of the Bond Oversight Committee
- Beth Morrissette, President of the Westside Board of Education
Oakdale, located at 9801 West Center Road, will open to students in January 2018. The $14 million dollar facility was made possible as part of Westside’s $79.9 million dollar Major Facilities Plan approved by voters in 2015. The new school replaces the original Oakdale Elementary, built in 1871 at 90th & West Center and rebuilt in 1927 at 98th & West Center. The community has been invited to see Oakdale Elementary during a public open house Thursday, December 14 from 5:30-7:00pm.
“We are extremely excited for our students to move in to these new learning spaces, designed for them and Westside learners for decades to come,” said Dr. Blane McCann, Westside Superintendent. “We are also grateful for the support of our community, who made this and future projects possible for our District, our teachers, and all of our students.”
Westside Community Schools would like to thank all of those who were supportive and influential throughout this process, including our Bond Oversight Committee members, members of the Oakdale Design Advisory Committee, Project Advocates, architect DLR Group, Prairie Construction and to all of the contractors who worked tirelessly over the last two years to make this day possible. A special thank you to Westside Chief Financial Officer Bob Zagozda, District Director of Building Services Larry Ware, Oakdale Principal Glen Jagels, and Rob Zimmerman and Joel McWilliams with Project Advocates, who have all made significant contributions to the inception, design and construction process of Oakdale.
Work has been underway at the site since the summer of 2016. Oakdale students have been attending class in a Swing School located at 108th & Grover; that site will now be used by Swanson Elementary students, as their school is decommissioned and rebuilt with a planned opening date of August 2019. Construction is also underway on a new Sunset Hills Elementary School, set to open to students in August 2018. Updates and renovations are also taking place at Westside Middle School.
