Simons Named Boys Varsity Basketball Coach
Westside High School is proud to announce Jim Simons as the next Head Coach of the WHS Boys Varsity Basketball program. Simons will take over for Brian Nemecek, who announced he was stepping down as coach earlier this year.
Simons is a longtime coach and educator with Westside Community Schools, working with Warrior Basketball and Baseball teams since 2000. A graduate of Westside High School, UNO and Doane College, Simons teaches History and Civics/American Government at WHS.
“I’m extremely excited and honored to be selected for this position,” said Simons. “We have several young, dynamic players in the program which should help provide a strong foundation for the future. I have a passion for Westside and look forward to continuing the strong tradition that has been set by Tom Hall, Dan Schinzel, and Brian Nemecek. All three are coaches I have learned a great deal from and have an enormous amount of respect for. Working the last 10 years for Brian has been a great learning experience that has prepared me for this opportunity. Additionally, the opportunity to work alongside successful, veteran coaches like Doug Woodard and Tom Krehbiel during the last several summers coaching with the OSA Crusaders has also been an invaluable experience and I credit a lot of my development as a coach to those experiences. We have several young, dynamic players in the program which should help provide a strong foundation for the future. My goal is that we will approach every day with a tremendous amount of pride and discipline in helping our student athletes become the best they can be in every facet of their lives.”
“Jim brings in a number of coaching experiences that will lead the boys program,” said WHS Athletic Director Tom Kerkman. “As a Westside Alum, Jim will bring passion and enthusiasm to the program everyday.”
