Dr. McCann offers message of thanks, congratulations for Hall of Fame winners
Posted November 2, 2018
The following is a message from Dr. Blane McCann, Superintendent of Westside Community Schools.
This week, we recognized seven outstanding alumni who graduated from our schools, and have gone on to achieve incredible success in a variety of career fields. Among them: a globally respected doctor with the Centers for Disease Control; a financial expert, overseeing a billion-dollar annual budget; and a technological visionary whose work is behind some of culture’s biggest entertainment and scientific breakthroughs. We also honored five individuals as Lighthouse Leaders, community members who have gone above and beyond to support our schools. CLICK HERE to learn more about the 2018 honorees.
As I looked around the room at the Hall of Fame dinner on Thursday evening, I thought: what an incredible gathering of people. We all have one thing in common: we are invested in Westside Community Schools. I want to congratulate all of our honorees, each of whom has impacted our District in unique ways, understanding their many talents and developing them into strengths that led to their success.
Don Clifton of Gallup asked once: What will happen when we think about what is right with people rather than fixating on what is wrong with them?
Here at Westside, we believe there is no right or wrong when it comes to helping our children discover their passions. We get to know our students and understand who they are as individuals. We help them identify their talents and our teachers help them develop those talents into strengths.
Just like our honorees, our students are connected by our community. Our students are unique; some dream of attending college and some dream of owning their own business. Some want to find the spotlight on the stage or the athletic field, and others want to explore the future and invent new technologies to make the world a better place for everyone.
We personalize our students’ learning experience to help them find the path where they may excel, and then we help them develop the skills and confidence needed to reach their goals and go places they imagined when they were 8 or 11 or 16 years old.
We thank the five individuals who help us create innovative learning environments through their leadership, and we congratulate seven graduates whose successes are proof to all of us the power of our investment in each and every student.
Thank you to our families and staff and community members who help our learners understand how unique they are. Thank you for supporting public education and improving the lives of our students. It is through our collective efforts that our students find their place in our world and ultimately help make our world a better place.
