2019 Spring Break Changes
At the request of Westside District Leadership, the Board of Education has voted to change the 2018-2019 Spring Break to March 18-22, 2019. It had been previously set for April 1-5, 2019.
As we have updated you throughout this school year, our previous Spring Break dates for 2018-2019 coincided with the Department of Education’s set ACT dates, affecting all of next year’s juniors at Westside High School. These dates are set by ACT and the state, and we do not have the ability to change them for our calendar here at Westside. We have constant conversations with NDE as to the best ways to alleviate and solve issues around this one important indicator of success.
This Spring, we were encouraged to use the online ACT test due to a calendar conflict. However, many of our students experienced technical issues, creating extensive problems. These issues impacted several districts statewide in addition to Westside Community Schools.
After considerable review, we proposed a new Spring Break of March 18-22, 2019. By changing these dates, we are ensuring all juniors will be available to take the traditional pencil/paper ACT exam on the set testing date. This week corresponds with the spring break of other Omaha metro-area school districts including Millard and Elkhorn and it occurs at a natural break between winter and spring athletic events.
This calendar conflict is unfortunate, but as mentioned, we have no control over the testing dates. Ultimately, this change allows our high school students who take this important examination to achieve the best results possible without conflict or distractions. The ACT not only affects their future with college acceptance and scholarships, it impacts our standing as both a district and at Westside High School. We hope this shift in planning positively impacts all involved, and we thank you for your patience and understanding.
